    Herpes wird in zwei unterschiedliche Typen unterteilt: Herpes-simplex-Virus-1 (HSV1) und Herpes-simplex-Virus-2 (HSV2). Während der zweite Typ recht selten vorkommt, geht das Bundesforschungsministerium davon aus, dass etwa 90 Prozent aller Deutschen vom ersten Typ betroffen sind. Wer einmal infiziert wurde, der trägt das Virus ein Leben lang in sich und es besteht immer wieder Gefahr, dass sich Herpesbläschen bilden.

    In den meisten Fällen verhält sich das Virus allerdings unauffällig. Laut der Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) tritt die Infektion nur bei zehn Prozent der Betroffenen durch äußerliche Beschwerden in Erscheinung. In der Regel kommt dies bei einem geschwächten Immunsystem, oder bei einer zu hohen UV-Strahlung vor.

    Herpes: An Overview

    Introduction:

    There are two variants of HSV called HSV-1 and HSV

    HSV-1

    • Transmitted by oral contact
    • Can cause oral herpes and sometimes, genital herpes
    • Billion people under the age of 50 (>67%) of the global population are infected

    HSV-2

    • Sexually transmitted
    • Causes genital herpes 
    • Million people between were infected (>13%) of the global population
    • Increases risk of acquiring and transmitting HIV (only when exposed to HIV)

    Symptoms:

    Both oral and genital herpes are mostly asymptomatic. This is why the infection is so widespread in the world. Symptoms usually start between 2 to 12 days from the infection.

    The ones near the mouth are commonly called cold sores. These could be painful at the site. The patients may also have tingling, itching or burning sensations in and around the mouth.
